NewFoodSystems – HELP

Development of blue light and UV exposure strategies for closed cultivation systems to induce plant secondary metabolites and reduce pathogens.

The research project HELP aims to optimize an innovative vertical production system for medicinal and spice plants, using peppermint as a model crop. At the core of the project is the use of shortwave radiation— particularly blue light as well as UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C—in closed production systems. Targeted light impulses are intended to stimulate the formation of secondary plant metabolites while effectively reducing phytopathogenic agents such as powdery mildew. The goal is to establish an economically viable system that enables highquality, sustainable peppermint production under controlled conditions, while simultaneously reducing the use of energy, water, fertilizers, and plant protection products.
